ERP programs rarely struggle because a platform lacks a feature. They struggle because integration points, data ownership and extension strategy were left to be decided during the build, when every decision is more expensive.

Decide the boundaries early

Before configuration begins, a program should be clear about which system owns each core record, how ERP will exchange data with commerce, CRM and finance tools, and which requirements will be met with standard functionality versus extensions.

Keep extensions upgrade-friendly

Customization is often necessary. The question is whether it is built in a way that survives the next platform release. An architecture-led approach keeps custom logic isolated, documented and testable.

Plan for the system you will run

Go-live is the beginning of the system's working life. Support ownership, monitoring and an enhancement backlog belong in the original plan, not in a scramble after cutover.
